PY1: Approaches to psychology Revision

Natural approach

Describe two presumption of the natural approach. [4]

One presumption of the natural approach is that the behaviour may be explained when it comes to different areas of the brain. The reason is , many different areas of the human human brain have been referred to as certain capabilities. The desapasionado cortex is divided into four lobes. The most important is the anterior cortex/lobe, because responsible for excellent motor movement and considering. Another lobe is the occipital lobe which is responsible for processing sensory data. For example , if someone involved to be poked in the eye, the occipital lobe will feeling and give the information for the brain through the central anxious system(CNS) telling it to react by closing the eyes instantly. Another presumption is that behaviour can be described in terms of the neurotransmitters. They can be different types of nerve fibres (neurone) within our system which usually carries info throughout our system and mind. They do and so through synapses, this is where the message is relayed by simply chemical communications. For example , as you take pain relievers the morphine will follow the bodies' usual pain relievers. The nerve cell communicates with one another from throughout the synapse making use of the chemical messengers (neurotransmitters). The serotonin (NT) will then take effect that can change our mood and feeling. Describe Selye's GAS model. [8]

Hans Selye research, like the study of ‘the facing page' led him to conclude that when family pets are exposed to nerve-racking situation, they will display a universal response to all stressor. He referred to as this standard adaptation affliction (GAS). To prove his theory, Selye's came up with 3 stages which leads to health issues, thus leading stress to illness- anxiety can result in a decrease of physical resource, which usually lowers the organism's resistant to infection. 1st stage Selye's proposed, was your alarm response. This is when the stressor recognised and response is made to the alarm. The hypothalamus in the brain causes the production of adrenaline from the adrenal glands. This triggers ‘adrenaline rush' this leads to openness for ‘flight or fight'. Stage two is the Resistance. This is when the entire body starts to adjust to the environment, yet at the same time assets are steadily depleting. The body seems as if it can coping, however in physiologically things are deteriorating. And stage 3 is the Exhaustion stage. This is when the body program can no longer preserve it frequent functions. As well as the stressor struggles to continue to cope with the stress, which exhaustion can lead to death if the stress continues. Hans figured these periods show how psychological concerns can lead to biological illnesses.

Describe how the neurological approach can be applied to either psychosurgery or chemotherapy. [12] Chemotherapy: the biological procedure believes all behaviour is definitely psychological in nature. One of the many assumptions with the biological strategy is that each of our behaviour may be explained by chemical messengers inside the brain, known as neurotransmitters. Radiation treatment is a remedy based on this method, and, based upon this presumption aim modifying neurotransmitter activity. Chemotherapy is the term used to explain the use of psychoactive drugs to treat mental disorders. Antidepressant medicine for example , work on the neurotransmitter serotonin, since it is believed that depression is a result of insufficient amount of this. These kinds of drugs generally work by simply reducing the interest rate at which selected neurotransmitters are re-absorbed in the nerve stopping. For example , SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) work simply by blocking the mechanism that re-absorbs the serotonin into the synapse. The result of this is more serotonin is left inside the synapse, improving the feeling of depression (hopefully). Antipsychotic medications are used to deal with disorders including schizophrenia. Chlorpromazine for example , is used to overcome the positive indications of...
